Project Overview
Bengaluru: The State Government’s ambitious Yettinahole Integrated Drinking Water Project (Stage-1) was commissioned on Friday by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in Sakleshpur taluk of Hassan district after a decade the works on the project started.
The Yettinahole project aims to divert water from west flowing streams of Yettinahole, Kadumane Hole, Keri Hole, and Hongada Halla in Sakleshpur taluk and redirect the water to areas in Eastern Karnataka that are parched for water including Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, Tumakuru, Ramanagar, Bengaluru Rural, and Kolar.
Objectives and Benefits
The Yettinahole project is designed to divert 24.01 tmc feet of water during the monsoon season. From this, it is planned to utilize 14.056 tmc feet to mitigate the water needs of the residents. Furthermore, another 9.953 tmc feet of water will be used to fill up 527 tanks to 50% capacity, aiding in the recharge of groundwater sources.
Overall, this project is expected to benefit an estimated 75.59 lakh residents across 6657 villages and 38 towns within 29 taluks spanning 7 districts.
Technical Details
The total length of Gravity Canal for the Yettinahole project is 252.61 km, out of which 42 km of work has been completed. Issues such as forest clearance and land acquisition have delayed the completion of the project. However, it is projected to be completed by March 2027. The project has achieved a cumulative financial progress of Rs 16,152.05 crore out of the estimated Rs 23,251.66 crore.
Current Progress and Future Timeline
Officials stated that the project, now having completed significant portions of the Gravity Canal work, is on course towards its 2027 completion date. However, the success of the projected timeline hinges on the resolution of ongoing issues, notably forest clearance and land acquisition.
