Assam: 2 Dead, 33 Injured During Eviction Drive at Sonapur in Kamrup
Guwahati, Sept 13: At least 33 people were injured and 2 others lost their lives in an intense confrontation between state authorities and alleged encroachers during an eviction drive on government land at Sonapur in Assam’s Kamrup (Metropolitan) district on Thursday.
Two people died after Assam police opened fire at the violent mob who tried to stop officials from carrying out the eviction drive. Prior to the firing, government officials from the Sonapur circle office, including on-duty police personnel, were attacked with sharp weapons, sticks and stones when they arrived for the eviction drive.
The assault resulted in injuries to 22 government officials, including a magistrate and over 10 police personnel. A police vehicle was also severely damaged in the fracas. In the wake of violent attacks by miscreants, police resorted to authorized use of force, injuring 13 people, two of whom were declared dead at the hospital.
Revenue authorities of Kamrup Metro have been carrying out the eviction drive in the notified tribal belt of Sonapur Revenue Circle since September 9, 2024. During this process, 248 bighas of government land has been cleared, removing 237 illegally constructed structures in the tribal belt.
Guwahati police have been directed to identify all miscreants involved in the attack on government officials and take lawful action. Assam DGP GP Singh said on X (formerly Twitter), “Conspiracy behind the attack on government officials that has taken place on the fourth day of the eviction process would also be investigated by @GuwahatiPol. All instigators and conspirators behind such attack would be brought to book in due course.”
