Global Skilling Centre at IIT Guwahati to Train Northeast Workforce

Guwahati, Sep 6: Youths aspiring to improve their skills in the aviation sector in Northeast India have a significant reason to smile.

A Global Skilling Centre in Aviation and Logistics Business will be established at IIT Guwahati following a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed with Airbus India Private Limited.

Director of IIT Guwahati, Prof. Devendra Jalihal, and Shri Suraj Chettri, VP of Airbus India, signed the memorandum, symbolizing a formal alliance and shared commitment towards innovation, excellence, and the advancement of aerospace technology and logistics hub development in Assam.

Key Collaboration Areas

The collaboration targets various sectors, including transportation, industries, hospitality, skilling, agriculture, and logistics, with a significant emphasis on expansion. The agreement reflects a mutual commitment to nurturing talent and fostering the next generation of aerospace professionals.

Remarks from the Assam Chief Minister

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, present at the occasion, stated that the MoA aims to bridge the current skills gap, foster sustained growth, and elevate the global competitiveness of the aviation and logistics sectors in the Northeast. He highlighted that the collaboration marks a crucial step towards creating a robust and dynamic workforce and enhancing the aviation and logistics industries.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the partnership would help address significant challenges in aviation, logistics, and related fields. He noted that the agreement symbolizes technological excellence and global leadership, essential for sustaining Assam’s technological advancement.

Impact of Act East Policy

The Act East Policy has opened new opportunities in communication, transportation, trade, business, tourism, cultural exchange, sports, information technology, and agriculture, linking Northeast India with ASEAN and BBN countries. The Chief Minister observed that India’s engagement with ASEAN countries has exponentially grown over the past decade. He pointed out that the region’s economic growth and development demands could be met through rapid aviation sector growth.

Historical Development in Aviation

The Chief Minister also highlighted the region’s aviation history, which spans several decades. He mentioned that tangible progress in air connectivity has been witnessed under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. The UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) scheme has significantly boosted regional connectivity in Northeast India, making air travel affordable for the masses.

“Under the UDAN scheme, the Prime Minister initiated historic steps to enhance regional air connectivity in the Northeast. These measures significantly facilitated air travel by making it more affordable,” the Chief Minister added. He also discussed the new infrastructure and facilities being developed in the aviation sector in recent years.

Benefits of the Global Skilling Centre

The Global Skilling Centre in Aviation and Logistics Business initiative will significantly improve employment and career advancement opportunities for individuals in the Northeast. It will elevate service quality in both logistics and aviation sectors, expanding trading opportunities within the country and beyond. The dynamic range of courses to be offered at the Centre will train 2,000 students annually from the Northeast and BBNI states, setting a new standard for aviation education in the region.

The agreement signing ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Director of IIT Guwahati Prof. Devendra Jalihal, VP of Airbus India Suraj Chettri, Head of Aftermarket Strategy & Business Development of Airbus India & South Asia Ashutosh Agarwal, Dean of IIT Guwahati Prof. Parameswar K. Iyer, faculty and staff members of the institute, students, and other representatives from Airbus India Private Limited.
